The contract means that, for the first time, all three major GP system suppliers in the UK can securely share patient data – with consent – benefiting NHS efficiency and patient care.
Neil Laycock, Managing Director of EMIS, said: “I welcome today’s news, which marks the beginning of a new era for interoperability in healthcare computing.
“The ability to securely share such a wide repository of patient data will deliver significant benefits for the NHS.
“As we have seen from our existing work with Healthcare Gateway, data-sharing means clinicians can deliver safer and more efficient care. For patients, it gives confidence that their care is fully informed at every point in the healthcare journey – whether in the GP surgery, community or hospital setting.”
He added: “This is also very good news for GPs working in areas with mixed system configurations, who can be confident that this is no longer a barrier to delivering truly joined-up patient care.”
